Happy Salma wears Equatorial Design by Warwick Purser
Long considered the guru of Indonesian craft, Warwick Purser has been collaborating with the legendary Happy Salma to develop a range of dynamic, contemporary fashion items, under the "Sasih" label, featuring a unique range of Batik designs and sustainable fabrics. The ever creative designers aim to rejuvenate Batik interest in younger clientele. From his traditional kampung base in Yogyakarta, Java, the enigmatic Warwick Purser has successfully encouraged local talented batik artisans to apply their time served skills in the creation of dramatic contemporary designs that form the heart of an extensive collection of fashion wear and homewares. In his words "the survival of craft, particularly that associated with fashion, is dependent on its ability to be able to adapt to the market's ever changing taste in terms of color, design and practicality. At this moment simplicity is the keynote of high fashion so hence our range is essentially a presentation of contemporary clean cut design, sometimes involving a modern concept of traditional motifs, and often using sustainable materials such as bamboo based textiles in its production." Warwick Purser has enjoyed an almost lifetime association with Indonesia. He was awarded Indonesian citizenship by Presidential decree for his contribution to the country that for some decades he has proudly called home.
